SAXOFOON TOP 100 – 2024
Het is 11 jaar geleden dat we een Top 100 Aller Tijden publiceerden met het bijzondere en misschien wel mooiste muziekinstrument: de saxofoon. Er zijn zoveel mooie saxofoonliedjes die we toen gemist hebben, dat het tijd wordt om de lijst te actualiseren. Wat is er zo bijzonder aan de saxofoon? Goeie vraag. Het is een heel vertrouwd, prettig geluid, maar het maakt niet standaard onderdeel uit van een lied. Het is niet zo gewoon als de gitaar, de piano en de drums. Liedjes met saxofoon zijn dus in dat opzicht bijzonder. Dat geldt voor wel meer instrumenten, bijvoorbeeld de klarinet, het accordeon, de blokfluit, de trompet, hoewel die laatste wordt veel vaker gebruikt. Waarom dan die saxofoon? Ik denk dat je kan zeggen dat onder de muziekinstrumenten is de saxofoon heet mooiste meisje van de klas.
Het gaat in deze lijst niet zo zeer om het mooiste liedje met daarin een saxofoon, maar meer om het liedje dat juist door de saxofoon zo mooi is. Liever niet de (instrumentale) liedjes waar de saxofoon de hoofdrol speelt, maar wel met een of meerdere spetterende solo’s, of waar de sax zich in 1 keer op een originele manier met het arrangement bemoeit.
De mooist solo blijft toch die van David Sanborn in het nummer Go Fishing van Roger Waters, die rustig zijn kinderen zit voor te lezen over Winnie the Pooh. Het komt uit zijn tenen zo hard blaast de volgens kenners de beste saxofonist ooit op zijn toeter, terwijl hoofdstuk 6 van het kinderverhaaltje op de achtergrond gewoon doorgaat. Blijft daarom gewoon op 1 staan. Ook verder bij de bovenste 20 weinig veranderingen. Nieuwe noteringen zijn er vooral van Steely Dan, Van Morrison en Spandau.
De lijst bekijken is leuk maar je kunt hem ook beluisteren op Spotify en dat is nog veel leuker. Veel plezier.
